Abuja, October 17, 2026 (CrestNewsOnline) ‎Amobi Nzelu, an Abuja-based legal practitioner, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s political direction, warning that the country may be drifting towards a one-party system.
‎Nzelu, who is the Principal Partner at Chinenye Chambers, sounded the warning while commenting on recent political developments, pointing at the reports of some opposition state governors agreeing to coordinate President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign.
‎He described the involvement of opposition figures in the ruling party’s campaign activities as a development that could undermine democratic principles.
‎”The opposition plays a critical role in a democratic system by providing checks and balances on the ruling party and holding the government accountable.
‎”But when opposition leaders take up responsibilities in the ruling party’s campaign, it could weaken their capacity to perform this important democratic function,” Nzelu said.
‎The lawyer who was widely known for his role in the Apo Six case observed that Nigeria’s political landscape had become increasingly difficult to understand.
“Several political manoeuvres and behind-the-scene activities remained unknown to the general public,” he stated.
‎Nzelu, while acknowledging that individuals have the constitutional right to support any political party or group of their choice, however noted that such decisions must be considered in the broader context of their implications for democracy.
‎The lawyer also noted that the current administration inherited a government facing significant challenges and had, in its efforts to address them, gone beyond acceptable limits in some areas.
Nonetheless, Nzelu expressed optimism that Nigeria’s future would ultimately be determined by the will of God in spite of the political challenges confronting the country.(www.crestnewsonline.ng)
