Washington, August 29, 2025 (dpa/CrestNewsOnline) United States President Donald Trump has cancelled the Secret Service’s extended personal protection for former Vice-President Kamala Harris, according to reports on Friday.
A previously unknown order from his predecessor Joe Biden, to grant Harris —- whom Trump defeated in last year’s presidential election —- one year of additional protection, has been revoked, according to broadcasters CNN and NBC News.
CNN said the special arrangement is now due to expire on Monday, a few weeks before the start of a reading tour for the publication of Harris’s book on the 2024 election campaign.
The Secret Service is responsible for the protection of high-ranking politicians in the U.S.
Former presidents are guarded for the rest of their lives, while vice-presidents, on the other hand, are only granted personal protection for six months after leaving office.
Because Harris’ term of office ended in mid-January, the Secret Service protection was due to expire in mid-July.
But, according to CNN, Biden tacitly extended Harris’ personal protection by one year by decree shortly before he left office.
Trump previously ordered the termination of personal protection for Biden’s children Hunter and Ashley in March.
The president also withdrew protection from his former secretary of state Mike Pompeo and his former adviser John Bolton —- now one of Trump’s most vocal critics.
