Abeokuta, July 16, 2025 (CrestNewsOnline) Professor Peter Okebukola, a former Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC), says it is important now for African leaders to make emphatic efforts and address corruption and poor governance on the continent.

Okebukola, while speaking from Ota in Ogun State, said this would help the continent and its people achieve a sustainable economic growth.

“Rampant corruption among some African leaders has led to distrust in governance, as well as economic instability and slow progress.

“This situation has led to reinforcing the idea that African leaders are incapable of delivering effective development, thereby fostering a sense of hopelessness and inferiority among citizens,” he said.

Okebukola noted that corruption and poor governance are significant challenges in Africa, leading to economic underdevelopment, social inequality and political instability.

“Therefore, there is the need for stronger institutions, transparency and accountability, in order to promote development and improve the lives of citizens.

“For instance, proper utilisation of funds in Africa is necessary for national development, which will in turn reduce heavy dependence on foreign countries,” he added.
